I am at a crossroad in my life. I don't know where to go or what to do. I have tried everything along my path to move forward and have failed.
The Orishas: Elegua
All the doors of my life have been shut tight. I continue to move on only to face the same obstacles and rejections. Perhaps, this has to do with my karma or life lessons I must face.
However, if it is not karma or a life lesson, help me to open the doors that are in front of me keeping me away from my true destiny.
You have been blessed by God to be the keeper of the keys to all life doors. Open the door s and allow me to move forward. Guide me to find my true path. In you, I place my trust. Ellegua is one of the most respected and loved orishas in the Santeria and Candomble religions. In addition, he is an extremely important orisha. He is a messenger of God and known as the Lord of all roads. He is responsible for opening and closing the paths in our lives.
Also, he is the symbol of the beginning and ending of life. During religious ceremonies, he is the first orisha that is called upon. This practice is necessary because without his permission practitioners are not able to communicate with the other orishas.
He opens the door that connects the person with the orishas. He is the gatekeeper between this world and the spirit realm. Offerings to Ellegua are done on Mondays. People pay tribute to him by offering his favorite treats.
Such treats consist of cigars, alcohol, coconuts, toasted corn and more.
His colors are red and black and number is 3. Below are brief stories of his greatness. R was facing financial problems. Things were going from bad to worst. His financial woes kept pulling him down into a dark, endless abyss. He decided to visit a Santeria practitioner for spiritual assistance. In most cases receiving ones ilekes Collares in Spanish is the first pass into the religion. It is a complex initiation tearing you away from your old life and setting your feet onto the path of your new life, your life in the Way of the Orishas La Regla Ocha.
From that moment on you will be under the care, protection and blessings of your godmother's or godfather's orishas. You that have experienced this initiation don't need to be told all this.
The rites that you went through explain this breaking away from your old life, your dependency on your godparents and their orishas, and the care and respect that is so much of this religion. Your ilekes are the banners of the orishas themselves and must be treated with respect.
They should never be worn when you are having your period or while you are having sex you should take a bath or shower before putting your necklaces on again. And you should not wear them to bed unless you are very ill and under the direction of your godmother or godfather. You also should not wear them when you go out "partying".
This is not to say these things are necessarily bad, it is merely that they must remain separate from them and their banners. Actually, the reason that a woman should not wear their ilekes when they are having their period is the same reason the matancero removes his ilekes during a sacrifice. Blood is hot and only cool things should be near the orishas except under specific conditions.
Also, you should not let other people touch your necklaces. You should put your necklaces on or remove them one at a time. This should be in the same order that you received them. If it has been determined which orisha rules your head then that orisha's ileke goes on last and Obatala's goes on second. You should kiss the necklaces as you put them on or remove them. They should be placed on a white cloth or on your altar to the orishas, not thrown in a jumble in a pocket or in your purse.
You must respect your ilekes as you would the orishas themselves.Elegua is the orisha who opens and closes all paths to mankind. He is the divider of heaven and earth. He travels between heaven and earth letting Olofi and Olodumare know what goes on in this realm. Elegua is a child orisha in some aspects that loves to play tricks and tests the faith of man. He walks between night and day searching for mankind to test their faith for the great Olofi and the orishas.
There is said to be paths of Elegua. He ranges from a young child to an old man with lots of knowledge. There is also a path of Elegua where the essence is of a woman. Elegua is seen all around the world. Elegua is any and everywhere. Elegua is the guardian of the dead also as thru him he unlocks the door for the deceased to walk through to reach Olofi where they will rest.
In this path he is called Eshu Alagwana. In other religions or beliefs you can associate him with the Egyptian god of the dead Osiris, who leads the dead through the underworld. Elegua is the one that makes you play at your own risk. If you make the wrong decision, Elegua will open the door with his garavato hook stick made from the guava tree to make you pay your consequence. While you are paying for your mistakes, he testes you again to see if you will continue to do wrong or take the right path.
If you succeed and take the right path he will unlock the door to happiness and fortune. Our lives are shaped into mazes to see which path we go. Elegua is the guardian that sits at every corner and turn of the maze. If you make the wrong move, he will open the path to the wrong outcome.
If you take the correct path, he will open the path that you are seeking. Elegua knows and sees all. He is the messenger of Olodumare and Olofi, alongside with the orishas. Which means, he is the one that takes the messages from humankind to the orishas and the messages from the orishas to Olofi.
This is why he is the first and last orisha to be praised to in every ceremony done in Santeria. A Pataki on Elegua One day Olofi was greatly ill and depressed on situations among the universe. He was doing so much in the universe and here on Earth as in still creating life, giving orishas their ache powers and so on. He was so tired that he grew frail. All of the orishas were summoned to see if they can help cure Olofi from his dilemma.
All of the orishas gathered in the great hall of Olofi where the supreme being sat on his throne with a lost look in his eye. As he sat slumped on his throne, the orishas gathered around and were conversing amongst each other. Obatala tried to clean him with his white cloth, Olofi remained the same. Orula prepared him a tonic to drink, and Olofi remained the same.Elegua is one of the four Orishas of the Santeria religion.
He is also known to be the most important of the four. His importance among the Orishas is due primarily to him being the first of them to be created. The Orishas are warriors, with the other three being named Oggun, Ochosi and Osun.
Elegua existed before creation and was witness to it after being created by Olodumare. He is the Orisha of the crossroads, which includes all other doors and roads. He is the very personification of destiny and fate and allows for the happiness of men. The number that symbolizes Elegua is 3, while his colors are black and red, displayed through a necklace. His partner is named Echu, who governs over all misfortune.
As touched upon previously, Elegua is the personification of destiny and fate among all of mankind. As he is the ruler of all crossroads, roads and doorways, it is said that he is present in all places at all times. All prayers are allowed to reach the other Orishas by Elegua. It is up to him whether the prayers or any religious practices reach the rest of the Orishas at all. Elegua has a wide variety of different roads at his disposal, each signifying a different and unique personality of his.
In fact, it is said that Elegua has roads in all, each of them found in different places of nature. He allows roads and doors to open from the spiritual world to the material world as a means of providing mankind with their destinies, allowing a persons fate to change at his will. He also has the ability to test a persons word and their integrity in order to find if that person is honest. While there are many different prayers associated with Elegua, there are two main orikis that are used the most.
The first of these goes like this: "Eshu protect my family. Protect the initiates of the Temple and me also. Let me not be moved against the people. Let not the people be moved against me. Grant me long life. Grant me peace. Grant me elevation of my consciousness. Grant me the ability to use my own hands. Eshu I salute you. My father, remover all evil, for us to walk in peace, loss is no more, tragedy is no more, sickness is no more, death is no more, unforeseen evil is no more, in the name of all children in this house.
I give you thanks, my father Elegba. Both standard food and sacrificed animals can be offered to Elegua at the alter. The one food that Elegua will outright not accept is pigeon. Any kinds of fish, yellow rice, toasted corn, tobacco, candies and liquor will be accepted by Elegua, as will nut oil and Chilean red pepper.
As for sacrificed animals, Elegua is partial to chickens, turtles, mouse, deer and male goats. One of the primary foods that can be offered to Elegua is popcorn served in a bowl and topped with smoked fish. This offering can be laid next to the shrine of Elegua. Another cooked food that works well as an offering is what is known as Eko.Eleggua is the most important orisha in Santeria. He opens the way and allows ache to flow in the universe. Eleggua also spelled Elegua, Elewa, Elegba or Legba is the most important of the orishas in Santeria.

He is also the first to test our integrity and our word. Because of this quality many followers of Santeria consider Elegba to be a trickster or a troublemaker.
At our church we prefer to think of him as the great experimenter, always testing humanity to see what will happen next. Every person receives Eleggua as the first orisha in his or her life emphasizing how important his presence is in our spiritual life and in the religion of Santeria.
A typical eleke for Eleggua consists of red and black beads.
